About meningitis
Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. Most cases are caused by bacteria or viruses, but some may becaused by certain medications or illnesses.
Bacterial meningitis is rare, but serious in general and can be life threatening if nottreated immediately. Viral meningitis (also called aseptic meningitis) is relatively common and far less serious. It often remains undiagnosed because its symptomscan be similar to normal flu.
Kids of all ages can be meningitis, but because it's just among people living in small spaces, young people, students, and boarding-school students have a higher riskfor disseminated infection.
If dealt with promptly, meningitis can be treated successfully. So it's important to getroutine vaccinations, know the signs of meningitis, and if you suspect that your childhas the disease, seek medical care immediately.
